About ACU

Abilene Christian University, a national leader in student success and Christian higher education, seeks an experienced leader with the vision and resourcefulness to serve as the university’s chief diversity officer (CDO). With dual reporting to the university’s president and provost, the CDO serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The CDO is responsible for setting and executing the strategy for leading institutional advancement and educational effectiveness by cultivating organizational capacity for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). In collaboration with university leaders, faculty, students and staff, the CDO will cast a strategic vision for institutional thriving in the area of DEI. The CDO will have oversight of creating policies, overseeing programming and fostering an inclusive campus atmosphere in which all community members can thrive. This will be accomplished in partnership with various campus constituents to cultivate and strengthen an inclusive and equitable campus environment. The search prospectus may be viewed here

 

ACU is in Abilene, Texas, a city of nearly 120,000 people 150 miles west of the Dallas and Fort Worth area. ACU Dallas, a branch campus in Addison, Texas, is the home of the university’s online programs. Basic Responsibilities

A. Cultivate university-wide organizational capacity for DEI.

B. Cast a strategic vision for institutional DEI that is thriving and contains forward
momentum.

C. Create, maintain and actively communicate a strategic plan for DEI that includes
measurable goals related to increased acquisition and retention of diverse students,
faculty and staff.

Essential Duties

A. Cultivate university-wide organizational capacity for DEI

1. Co-chair the Diversity Council with the president and serve on other
relevant councils.

2. Oversee periodic university-wide diversity campus climate studies and
other assessment of diversity initiatives.

3. Plan and implement annual training for faculty and staff, including
leadership groups.

B. Cast a strategic vision for institutional DEI that is thriving and contains forward
momentum.

1. Represent the president and university on diversity matters, internally and
externally.

2. Cultivate an interactive and accessible relationship with the Senior
Leadership Team, Provost’s Cabinet and Deans’ Council, as well as
various leadership groups within Colleges and Athletics.

3. Engage with students, faculty, staff, administration and external
constituents in matters of DEI.

4. In collaboration with the Office of Research, pursue and manage relevant
external funding sources for university diversity programs.

C. Create, maintain and actively communicate strategic plan for DEI that includes
measurable goals related to increased acquisition and retention of diverse
students, faculty and staff

1. Support and encourage strategic diversity goals for the university.

2. Develop a strategic framework to prevent, reduce and respond to any
incidents of bias or hate.

3. Manage the university’s bias incident reporting system.

Qualifications

A. Doctorate preferred, with a minimum requirement of a Master’s degree from an
accredited institution of higher education. Preferred fields of expertise are
diversity studies, higher education administration or other relevant disciplines.

B. Demonstrated success as a VP of Diversity or CDO/Associate CDO in higher
education is preferred.

C. Demonstrated record of strong leadership addressing organizational culture and
climate, preferably related to diversity and inclusion actions within higher
education.

D. Extensive knowledge of diversity issues, current trends and best practices.

E. Demonstrated cultural humility, along with comfort and skill in building
relationships of trust with various university groups and constituents.

F. Strong record of understanding of contexts and cultures within the institution that
impact the implementation and management of effective diversity change efforts.

G. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.

H. Demonstrated skills in building consensus and support, and reconciling competing
interests.

I. Demonstrated ability to multi-task diverse projects and work cooperatively with
others.

Physical Demands

A. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 25% of the time.

B. Ability to use a computer and other office productivity machinery.

C. Ability to frequently move about to attend meetings.
