Faculty Position Information

I. Major Responsibilities: 

  1. Encourage student progress on dissertations and doctoral projects. 

  2. Ensure dissertation/project guidelines are observed. 

  3. Identify, vet, and hire potential dissertation/project chairs and committee members. 

  4. Provide training and mentoring for dissertation/project chairs and committee members. 

  5. Evaluate the dissertation/project process as it relates to program and student learning outcomes. 

  6. Serve as the Dean’s Representative on committees, as needed.

II. Essential Duties: 

  1. Encourage student progress on dissertations and doctoral projects. 

  1. Assign students to a dissertation/project chair based on their content interest or methodological needs. 

  2. Assist students in identifying additional committee members. 

  3. Track progress on dissertation/project milestones, advising students of next steps or gaps.

  1. Ensure dissertation/project guidelines are observed. 

  1. Ensure that program-specific dissertation/project guidelines are accurate and regularly updated to reflect programmatic and university expectations. 

  2. Provide training to students, dissertation/project faculty, and Student Services. 

  1. Identify, vet, and hire potential dissertation/project chairs and committee members. 

  1. Review applications and interview candidates for dissertation/project chair and committee appointments. 

  2. Ensure candidates are properly credentialed according to SACSCOC policy. 

  1. Provide training and mentoring for dissertation/project chairs and committee members. 

  1. Train new dissertation/project chairs and committee members regarding program and CGPS policies and procedures. 

  2. Mentor new dissertation/project chairs. 

  3. Offer guidance and intervention when problems arise between students, chairs, and committee members. 

  1. Evaluate the dissertation/project process as it relates to program and student learning outcomes. 

  1. Oversee the pedagogical and structural integrity of the dissertation/project process in coordination with the Program Director. 

  2. Ensure outcome and curricular alignment in the dissertation/project process. 

  3. Conduct an annual review of the dissertation/project Canvas course, pertinent sections of the Handbook, and relevant processes. 

  1. Serve as the Dean’s Representative on committees, as needed.

  1. Provide clarity for chairs and committee members about University and Program processes and policies as noted in the dissertation or project Handbook or from direct communications from the Dean’s Office.

  2. Ensure the necessary forms are completed. 

  3. Act as arbiter between committee members, if necessary. 

  4. Engage in proposals and defenses to ensure the chair is reflecting the wishes of the committee. 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements 

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D.

  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching at the graduate level. 

  • Significant experience and knowledge regarding the completion of graduate theses, projects, and dissertations. 

  • Effective leadership skills.

  • Proficient in computer skills and working in an online learning environment. 

  • Highly motivated and able to self-direct and manage work. Able to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment. 

  • Collaborative spirit 

  • ACU is affiliated with the fellowship of Churches of Christ. Position requires the employee to be a professing Christian and to be willing to support the Christian mission of ACU. 

Preferred Experience 

  • Academic training in the social sciences or health sciences. 

  • Expertise in quantitative research methods.

  • Expertise in helping students and faculty navigate the Internal Review Board.

  • Excellent communication, writing, problem-solving, and interpersonal abilities consistent with a leadership role. 

  • Experience working with diverse student populations. 

  • Experience leading, supervising and/or working with interprofessional groups. Experience teaching, designing, and developing online coursework. 

  • Excellent organizational skills. 

  • Experience in higher education administration. 

  • Demonstrated achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service.
