Basic Responsibilities A. Coordinate and manage tutoring component.
B. Monitor academic progress for participants including GPA and test scores.
C. Recruit eligible students for the program.
D. Aid in planning and scheduling program activities during the academic year and
E. Assist the Director in monitoring compliance by overseeing the entry, updating
and correctness of the program database according to Federal guidelines.
Essential Duties A. Coordinate and manage tutoring component.
1. Recruit, interview, hire and conduct training for tutors during the academic year.
2. Organize and evaluate tutors throughout the academic year.
3. Arrange and monitor transportation for program participants.
4. Meet frequently with program participants regarding tutoring component
effectiveness and learning enhancement.
5. Provide periodic reports to Program Director regarding tutoring outcomes.
B. Monitor academic progress for participants including GPA and test scores. 1. Coordinate and administer pre- and post-tests to continuing and new participants.
2. Identify the academic needs of program participants based on high school grades
and develop IDP (Individual Development Plan) for new students within 60 days
of entering the program and update as needed.
3. Work with Abilene ISD at-risk counselors, office staff and administrators to
acquire six-weeks grade reports, transcripts and standardized test scores (SAT,
ACT, PSAT, PLAN and TAK) for all program participants in order to maintain
accurate, up-to-date participant records.
4. Conduct advising sessions with participants and parents each semester to discuss
progress toward academic and personal goals.
5. Teach academic enhancement classes as well as conduct team building exercises
for participants.
C. Recruit eligible students for the program. 1. Coordinate recruiting efforts at Abilene ISD target school campuses in accordance
with grant guidelines.
2. Assist with developing various media to enhance recruiting and retention
3. Participate in the recruiting, application, interviewing and selection process of
new participants each program year.
4. Monitor the receipt and collection of new applications.
5. Schedule interviews and meeting space for applicants and parents.
D. Aid in planning and scheduling program activities during the academic year and
summer component. 1. Secure classrooms and transportation at ACU and Abilene ISD during the
academic year and summer component for program use.
2. Create and maintain current academic year and summer component calendars.
3. Collaborate with Program Director and staff regarding specific program
curriculum, calendar formats, session dates and times for academic year and
summer component.
4. Assist with management of participants during program activities as well as
summer advisors.
Assist in monitoring the compliance of Upward Bound program with federal

Professional Development Requirements A. Skills
1. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software and ability to understand
database software.
2. Familiarity with Texas high school requirements for course credits and

4. Ability to work with low-income, first-generation and ethnically diverse student
populations with sensitivity.
5. Excellent organization and communication skills.
6. Working knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes.
7. Familiarity with “at risk” disadvantaged students, developmental studies,
computer assisted instruction, learning style modalities and utilization of
interactive tutoring approaches.

Qualifications A. Professional
1. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Prefer degree with
emphasis in education, counseling, psychology or related field.
2. Experience in teaching, advising and employee supervision desired.
3. Experience working with students who are traditionally underrepresented in
higher education.
4. Must be able to supervise and coordinate activities for high school students.
5. Experience in writing articles for newsletters and desktop publishing desired.
6. Ability to make professional presentations to students, parents and community.
7. Proficiency in Spanish communication is preferred.

program participants and parents.

Physical Demands A. Ability to work a flexible schedule with some evening and weekend work during the
school year and some extended hours during summer.
B. Must possess a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record and access to reliable

D. Ability to file and retrieve materials from filing sources.
E. Must be able to carry twenty-five (25) pounds or more.
F. Ability to travel to professional development conferences.
