Basic Responsibilities A. Provide formative writing instruction and feedback to all levels of students with a focus on
doctoral students in the EdD in Organizational Leadership, EdD in Educational Leadership, and
Doctor of Nursing Practice programs.
B. Create and deliver live and prerecorded doctoral writing-related webinars, videos, and
instructional resources targeting specific writing needs of doctoral students and faculty.
C. Develop and lead current and new OWC services for doctoral students.
D. Support the strategic development and leadership of the OWC to create a writing culture of
inclusion and excellence.
Essential Duties 

 Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

A. Provide formative writing instruction and feedback to all levels of students with a focus on doctoral students in the EdD in Organizational Leadership, EdD in Educational Leadership, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs.

  • Deliver doctoral-level writing tutoring and support both asynchronously and synchronously.

    • Provide feedback on doctoral student course papers, dissertation chapters, and research proposals for content, organization, task fulfillment, academic integrity, voice, flow, cohesion, format, and APA adherence.

    • Foster professional relationships with doctoral students and communicate records of student progress, including challenges and successes, to aid retention.

  • Provide assessment, appropriate referral, and intervention for individual students by serving as a liaison between students and faculty.

B. Create and deliver live and prerecorded doctoral writing-related webinars, videos, and instructional resources targeting specific writing needs of doctoral students and faculty.

  • Offer live webinars for doctoral students, including drop-in tutoring hours and live feedback workshops via Zoom.

  • Develop prerecorded webinars, video tutorials, and instructional resources for doctoral students, faculty, and staff, for use in tutoring and course resources.

  • Maintain accessible online warehouses for webinar recordings and other resources.

C. Develop and lead current and new OWC services for doctoral students.

  • Collaborate with the OWC leadership, Applied Research Center (ARC), and other stakeholders to develop and launch a pilot dissertation and doctoral project writing bootcamp or similar new service.

  • Support the editorial review process.

  • Gather and report data on usage and effectiveness of new services.

D. Support the strategic development and leadership of the OWC to create a writing culture of inclusion and excellence.

  • Offer training and leadership to the OWC team, faculty, and dissertation chairs and committee members about providing effective feedback for doctoral students.

  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to report on OWC services in order to promote doctoral student success and retention and for strategic planning purposes.

  • Comply with all pertinent policies and procedures outlined in Abilene Christian University’s Dissertation Handbook and Faculty and Staff Guidelines.

Professional Development Requirements

A. Skills

  • Attention to detail and follow through

  • Computer literate in software and internet-based applications

  • Expertise in APA style (7th edition) and sufficient familiarity with social science research to effectively coach students writing their doctoral studies

  • Time management and organizational skills

  • Maintain confidentiality

B. Training Modules Required

  • Internal, self-paced tutor training modules, including:

    • OWC tutoring best practices

    • Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, Canvas (LMS), and Turnitin

Qualifications

A. Professional

  • Master’s degree is required, doctoral degree is preferred, from an accredited institution, preferably in English, education, or the social sciences.

  • Graduate-level teaching or tutoring experience required.

    • Expertise (teaching or research) in use of online learning technologies to provide individualized feedback and meet nontraditional, adult, and multilingual learners’ needs, preferred.

  • Experience or expertise with the publication of research preferred.

B. Personal

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Collaborative nature with the ability to build consensus within cross-functional and multipurposed teams, as well as diverse groups of people.

  • Highly self-motivated and solves problems, asking for input and initiating solutions as appropriate and reasonable.

  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills with the ability to consistently meet deadlines.

  • Capacity for ongoing learning, feedback, and development in theories of writing, online higher education, and inclusion.

C. Other

  • ACU is affiliated with the fellowship of Churches of Christ. This position requires the employee to be a professing Christian and to be willing to support the Christian mission of ACU.

A. Majority of work is performed in front of a computer and on the phone.

  • Manage conversations in person, online, and by telephone.

    C. Limited travel.
