Faculty Position Information

Tenure-Track Faculty Department of Engineering and Physics

Abilene Christian University is seeking an energetic, talented physicist for its renowned physics program. This Tenure-Track faculty position is at the level of assistant professor. Applicants should have strong skills in mentoring students in classroom and research situations. Ideal candidates will work with our DOE funded nuclear physics research group but all candidates with a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field are encouraged to apply. Interested persons should apply as soon as possible. Applications from qualified women and minorities are especially encouraged. Applications supported by all required materials on or before November 15, 2024 will receive full consideration. Anticipated start date is August 2025.

ACU’s Department of Engineering and Physics has prepared undergraduates for careers in STEM for more than 50 years. An engineering program was added in 2012 and the department currently serves approximately 30 physics majors and 160 engineering majors. The department has more than 50,000 square feet of class and lab space available for teaching, learning, and research. Additionally, Abilene Christian University was ranked in the Top 10 in three categories (Service Learning, First-Year Experience, and Learning Communities) and ranked in a total of five out of eight categories in the U.S. News & World Report 2024 “Programs to Look For” benchmarks. Applicants must convincingly demonstrate how they can mentor ACU students toward entering and leading in STEM careers. Candidates should also demonstrate how they can be flexible, adaptable, and resourceful in supporting this program.

Typical Duties:
● Effectively teach physics courses as needed throughout the curriculum.
● Mentor physics students in classroom, research, and professional situations.
● Partner in continuously improving teaching, courses, and labs to support the curriculum.
● Participate in assessment efforts to support curricular development.
● Develop, encourage, and participate in experiential learning activities.
● Develop instructional methods that will reflect best practices in physics pedagogy.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
● Ph.D. degree in physics, physics education, or a closely related field.
● Demonstrated record of effective communication, teamwork, and planning skills.
● Record of or demonstrated potential for effective physics teaching.

Preferred Qualifications
● Ph.D. in physics, physics education, or a closely related discipline.
● Ability to contribute to our well established nuclear physics research group
● Classroom teaching experience at the University level.
● Coursework or formal training in physics education pedagogy.
● Experience in course and curriculum development.
