Faculty Position Information

Abilene Christian University is seeking an energetic, talented civil engineer for its rapidly growing engineering program. This tenure track faculty position offers excellent opportunities to contribute to and shape the program. Applicants should have especially strong skills in mentoring students. Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. in Civil engineering, engineering education, or in a closely related engineering discipline with an emphasis in structures. Candidates should have demonstrated potential to teach a variety of engineering courses effectively in our program’s curriculum, experience in research and scholarship activities appropriate to the discipline and potential to build a sustainable research program involving undergraduates. Interested persons should apply as soon as possible. Nominations of and applications from qualified women and minorities are especially encouraged. Applications supported by all required materials on or before February 1, 2021 will receive full consideration. Anticipated start date is August 2021.

ACU’s engineering program started in the fall of 2012 and currently has approximately 160students. The program is ABET/EAC accredited under “General Engineering.” The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with concentrations in civil, electrical, industrial, and mechanical. More than 50,000 square feet of class and lab space was recently renovated for the department. Additionally, for the second year, Abilene Christian University is the highest-ranking university in Texas in a U.S. News & World Report benchmark focused on student success. ACU achieved Top 10 status in three of eight high-impact categories among 1,500 universities evaluated for “A Focus on Student Success” and is the only Texas institution to be ranked in four of the categories (including service learning and undergraduate research). Applicants must convincingly demonstrate how they can mentor ACU students toward entering and leading in the engineering workplace from day one. Candidates should also demonstrate how they can be flexible, adaptable, and resourceful in supporting this fast growing program.

Typical Duties:
- Effectively teach civil engineering courses as well as a wide variety of lower level engineering courses.
- Mentor engineering students.
- Partner in continuously improving teaching, courses, and labs to support the curriculum.
-Participate in assessment efforts to support curricular development and ABET accreditation.
-Develop, encourage, and participate in engineering experiential learning activities.
-Serve as advisor to student professional groups.
-Develop instructional methods that will reflect best practices in engineering pedagogy.
-Develop a program of scholarly activities which involves undergraduate students and is consistent with the candidate’s interests and university mission.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
-Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering, Engineering Education, or a closely related field.
-Past record of Effective communication, teamwork, and planning skills.
-Record of or demonstrated potential for scholarly work.

Preferred Qualifications
-Classroom teaching experience at the University level.
-Coursework or formal training in engineering education pedagogy.
-Experience in course and curriculum development.
-Professional engineering licensure or ability to obtain one.
