Faculty Position Information

The Department of Communication and Sociology at Abilene Christian University, located in Abilene, Texas, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, assistant professor position of communication with a focus in rhetoric beginning August 2023. The position includes an annual teaching load equivalent to four courses per semester, developing and maintaining an active scholarly agenda, and engaging in service to the department, university, and profession. The ideal candidate will have experience as a rhetorical scholar in communication studies and demonstrate the ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Assigned courses will include rhetorical criticism, rhetoric of pop culture, and rhetorical theory, among others. Additional duties and courses may include directing the basic course and teaching public speaking, executive coaching, event communication, and other communication courses and duties as determined by the department chair.

The Department of Communication and Sociology offers two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in communication and an interdisciplinary minor in leadership. We also host the ACU Speaking Center and a nationally ranked debate team. ACU is an R3 university where faculty focus on integrating faith and learning in the classroom and engage in research with graduate and undergraduate students on a broad range of topics. (1) A letter demonstrating their qualifications for the position

(2) A curriculum vitae

(3) brief teaching statement including philosophy of teaching and evidence of teaching effectiveness

(4) A statement of how faith informs their teaching

(5) A brief research statement reviewing focus, expertise, accomplishments, and goals

(6) Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work

Qualifications Applicants must have a Ph.D. in communication by August 2023 and demonstrate potential for effectiveness in teaching and scholarship. Minimum of two years teaching experience and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate research and student mentoring are required. The ability to direct the basic course and courses in emerging trends in the field is preferred.
